Agile is Not a Threat, But a Blessing for Project Managers

Even though agile is the most coveted project management methodology, project managers find it a threat to their position.

In this article at IT Web, Melani French explains that in the agile milieu, project managers are just value generators or facilitators, but may not act like leaders. This does not make agile a perceived threat but a medium to meet ends.

Breaking Preconceived Notion

The way teams are structured, hierarchies flattened, and tasks accomplished, agility might feel alien to the conventional project managers. However, if you work as part of a holistic web of teams, all chasing the same goal, nothing can bring better outcomes than agile methodology. Thus, to become agile, adopt the agile mindset first. Here is a list of smart ways to adopt agile mindset:

  1. Get Trained: No harm in starting with a daylong agile boot camp to get the fundamentals clear.
  2. Keep Flexible Scope: Instead of pushing teams to work for you, extend a helping hand to them. Form a backlog of items that need to be done and let the teams pull out required documents from that backlog as and when required.
  3. Be Transparent: Maintain transparency with the team, stakeholders, and clients. In fact, share your thought process with everyone and win trust.
  4. Value the Voice: Being the manager, even if you are a jack of all trades, do not show it. Let each individual in the team showcase his/her subject matter expertise.
  5. Prioritize the Backlog: Facilitation remains at 80 percent of what you do in an agile project management environment.
  6. Make it Fun Again: An engaging project could be fun if the project managers try to make it so.
  7. Minimum Viable Product: Instead of forcing the team to deliver quality outcomes, sometimes limit them to a rather functional output. The quality will eventually come without over slogging the team.
