Activities a Newly Formed Agile Team Should Do

While creating an agile team, or any team for that matter, your priority should be to start well. Various factors come into consideration. Are the team members acquainted with each other? Is there a standard your company expects to maintain while working as a team? Are the teammates co-located or distributed? Starting right can help your agile team to generate the same level of project efficiency as the existing teams. So, pay a lot of attention to the activities that the team does together. Following are the activities that your newly formed agile team should do:

Start Knowing Each Other: They might know each other by face or designation but have not had the chance to work together. It is important to break the ice for new joinees, cross-functional resources, or distributed team members in the agile team. When one shares personal stories and anecdotes, others in the team would relate to the common experiences. Have lunch together or have a coffee break after the meeting when everyone needs a timeout. Start by sharing a funny story. If the team travels frequently, nobody is caught up in the daily responsibilities after work. Utilize this free time to bond.

Establish Standards for the Team: As you comply by the organizational ethics, set up some work methodology for the agile team as well. Scrum, XP, and Kanban are some of the popular approaches. Discuss working standards, terminologies, the definition of complete and ready, and sprint approach—iterative or flow. If the team members are also new to the Agile methodology, train them. Agile is based on values and principles, so opinions might differ. Empower the different approaches as long as your operational ability is improving.

Find the Purpose of Your Work: While all should agree on how you must coordinate, it is crucial to know the purpose of your efforts. Find out if anyone disagrees with the vision. Create a problem statement and metrics to solve issues.

Make the Activities Useful and Funny: As you educate the agile team regarding work style and expectations, conversations can get a bit too dry. You do not have to make meetings funny. Just make sure everyone finds something useful from the standup calls and discussions. Though some would prefer the fun part more, it would seem a waste of precious hours for others.
