How to Hire a Scrum Master

Step 1

Analyze the candidates’:

  • Understanding of agile values, principles, and practices
  • Ability to facilitate team development
  • Cultural and personal fit
  • Servant-leadership strengths and weaknesses

Step 2

Determine candidates’:

  • Understanding of Scrum events and team interaction, including key facilitation opportunities—product backlog refinement and sprint retrospectives
  • Capability to manage risks

This retrospective allows you to know how self-aware the candidates are, and it provides an opportunity for them to go back and correct anything they missed. Furthermore, it also provides applicants a chance to emphasize their strengths and demonstrate their expertise.

These approaches create a safe environment for candidates to demonstrate their skills and overall fit within the team and organization. Remember, Scrum Masters must possess facilitation skills, agility, organizational skills, and a prioritization approach. They must also clearly define ‘done’ and understand effective retrospectives.

Involve Development Team

It is crucial to involve the development team, to which the Scrum Master will serve as a leader, in the recruitment process. This is because the development team and Scrum Masters work together as one team, and there must be a common understanding between them.
