DevOps functions best when developers do the operations rather than hiring a dedicated engineer. “This gives developers better visibility into DevOps KPIs, such as deployment, frequency, deployment time, change failure rate, time to detected, and availability,” says Doerrfeld.

Developers Know Their Codes the Best

Identifying errors and risks in an unfamiliar environment is not an easy task. If the DevOps engineer fails to instantly link errors to application processes, it could hurt availability and service-level agreements (SLA). Therefore, organizations must encourage developers to identify the issues. This will reduce time in addressing the issues because developers know their codes the best.

They Can be Flooded with Requests

According to studies, the ratio of DevOps engineers to developers stands between 1:10 to 1:12. Thus, it is unsustainable for one DevOps engineer to manage a tidal wave of requests and application deployment pipelines. So what happens when a DevOps engineer is unavailable? To avoid delays, organizations must encourage developers to own their code development process from end to end.

Unclear Expectations

Often, organizations look for DevOps engineers with experience in Linux, MySQL, Java, and MongoDB. On the other hand, they also look for Linux experts who understand Java developers. These unclear expectations can make it challenging for organizations to find the right talent for the job role.
